Looking forward to 2021 and beyond, there are many open questions about the directions of scientific research funding. Many government, corporate, and institutional funding streams are in flux, and the potential macroeconomic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on research are unclear. These impacts are not evenly distributed by domain of research or by the type of institution receiving or disbursing those funds, with some organizations doing reasonably well, and others are in a much more precarious position. Layered upon this are the various demands funding organizations are putting on researchers and institutions regarding openness of the resulting findings and the demands of greater transparency. Inevitably the policies made by funding bodies, their funding priorities, and even their ability to fund efforts at a given level will have profound implications on scholarly communications well beyond any particular initiative. During this Scholarly Kitchen session, we'll explore the future direction of research funding through a conversation with representatives from philanthropic, national, corporate, and regional funding organizations offering a range of perspectives.
