About the session

The US OSTP’s Nelson Memo, which requires immediate public access to federally funded research papers, sent a shockwave across the scholarly communications landscape. Now that the first policy implementations of the memo are out, what impacts will it have on different stakeholders in our community? A panel of publishers and librarians will reflect on how they plan to support researchers and what these changes mean for the overall health of their organizations.

Stephen F. Gates ’68 University Librarian, Yale University

Barbara Rockenbach is the Stephen F. Gates ’68 University Librarian at Yale University. Rockenbach has held a series of user-focused positions in the Columbia University Library, the Yale University Library, and JSTOR. The focus of her work has been on the intersection of collections, technology, and pedagogy, including advancing research and learning through visual literacy, research education, and digital humanities. She has published and presented in these areas and serves as a board member of the Wenner-Gren Foundation and the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, positions that amplify her commitment to public scholarship. Rockenbach holds an MS in library and information science from the University of Pittsburgh, an MA in Art History from Hunter College, and a BA in English from the University of Illinois.
President, Research, Springer Nature

Steven Inchcoombe is President, Research at Springer Nature. Previously he was Chief Publishing Officer and before that he was CEO at Nature Publishing Group and Palgrave Macmillan. Steven is committed to serving researchers and the wider research ecosystem. He has led the company’s publishing, editorial, products and platforms for many years and is now focused on enabling the company to play a key role in transitioning to a more efficient and impactful research system that uses open techniques to improve outcomes, integrity and assessment of researchers and their supporting organizations. Steven was awarded a scholarship to Merton College, Oxford, where he read Physics specializing in atomic and solid-state physics and qualified as a chartered accountant with PWC in 1990.
Vice President, Organizational Strategy, ITHAKA

Roger C. Schonfeld is the vice president of organizational strategy for ITHAKA and of Ithaka S+R’s libraries, scholarly communication, and museums program. Roger leads a team of subject matter and methodological experts and analysts who conduct research and provide advisory services to drive evidence-based innovation and leadership among libraries, publishers, and museums to foster research, learning, and preservation. He serves as a Board Member for the Center for Research Libraries. Previously, Roger was a research associate at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Chief Publishing Officer, American Physiological Society (APS)

Colette Bean is Chief Publishing Officer at the American Physiological Society (APS) overseeing its family of journals and their newest open access journal launch, Function. Colette joined APS in 2019 and has been focused on introducing new products and services to prepare the organization for an open access future. Colette currently sits on the STM Board. She is also a member of the CLOCKSS Board of Directors and a member of the American College of Physicians Publications Committee. Prior to APS, Colette worked at Wiley where she most recently served as VP and Society Publishing Director in the U.S overseeing the management of 350+ society-owned life sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences and humanities journals. She also previously served as Chair of the Executive Committee of the PSP Division at AAP.
Vice President of Publishing, American Society of Clinical Oncology

Angela Cochran is the Vice President of Publishing for the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Previously, she was Managing Director and Publisher at the American Society of Civil Engineers in Reston, Virginia. She has served in the roles of Associate Publisher, Journals Director, Production Director, and Journals Production Manager for ASCE. She was a Managing Editor at the American Cancer Society and a Production Editor for Appleton & Lange and at Pearson Education. She is past-president of the Society for Scholarly Publishing and the Council of Science Editors. She is an associate editor and a regular contributor of The Scholarly Kitchen.
