About the session

In an era of tightening library budgets and evolving research behaviors, professional and scholarly publishers are under growing pressure to expand beyond traditional subscription models. This webinar explores practical and forward-looking strategies for revenue diversification that align with publishers’ missions while responding to market realities. Attendees will gain insight into alternative income streams such as data and analytics services, author- and institution-facing products, licensing and partnerships, sponsored content, education and training offerings, and value-added digital tools that enhance research workflows.

Designed for publishing executives, strategy leaders, and product managers, the session will focus on real-world examples and decision frameworks that help organizations assess fit, risk, and scalability. The discussion will address how to pilot new initiatives, balance commercial innovation with scholarly integrity, and build internal capabilities to support long-term growth. Participants will leave with actionable ideas and a clearer understanding of how diversified revenue models can strengthen resilience and sustainability in the rapidly changing scholarly communications landscape.

    David Myers – Is a serial entrepreneur and a recurring-revenue, licensing and B2B information expert. With over 30 years experience specializing in Strategy, Sales, Legal, Licensing and Business Development, he has drafted, negotiated and closed over 500 domestic and international licensing agreements with partners, customers and distributors. He has also negotiated and closed countless business alliances, strategic partnering, and revenue generation deals. Prior to starting his consulting practice, he was Executive Director, Global Licensing and Business Development with Wolters Kluwer Health for 7 years.
  • Managing Director, Gunter Media Group

    Darrell is an accomplished digital publishing executive and has been at the forefront of new technology initiatives at Dow Jones Financial News Services, Elsevier, Collexis, and the American Institute of Physics. Since 2010, his consultancy firm, Gunter Media Group, Inc., has advised CEOs from startups to large companies, and he is an operating partner with TriArtisan Capital in New York. He is an adjunct professor at the Seton Hall University’s Stillman School of Business, where he teaches Professional Sales to both undergraduate and graduate students. He is a published author of the edited volume "Transforming Scholarly Research with Blockchain Technologies and AI." His other publications can be accessed on his ORCID profile. He graduated from Seton Hall University's W. Paul Stillman School of Business (BS Business Administration- Marketing) and Lake Forest Graduate School of Management (MBA). Darrell serves on several non-profit boards: Humane Society of the United States, USA Boxing Foundation, Wissahickon Trails, Global DARE, and Montgomery County Community College Foundation. In his spare time, he and his wife Deb enjoy their fur babies, three cats, Shadeux, Milo, and Boots, and their active Border Collie, Rylee.

    With more than twenty-five years of experience in society publishing and association management, Lori Carlin is a recognized expert in customer insight, market research, marketing strategy, and digital product development. Lori is currently the CCO and Senior Consultant at Delta Think, Inc., and has also held senior positions in Marketing, Sales, Online Content Delivery, and Subscriber/Member Services for a number of scholarly publishers and societies. As CCO, Lori is responsible for business development/new business opportunities and partnerships, as well as corporate marketing and corporate communications for Delta Think. On the consulting side, Lori actively engages with clients to support their needs in all areas, with a special emphasis on business strategy and analysis, customer insight, and market research and strategy implementing customer insight methodologies and building effective strategies for publishing programs and products, and has helped professional societies and corporations develop and deliver publishing products that best meet and exceed customer needs. She is also very active in the publishing industry, currently serving as SSP Annual Meeting Co-Chair, and held previous positions as a SSP Board Member, as well as numerous committee chair and member positions for SSP, ASAE, and PSP.
