As research communities face growing social, political, and financial pressures, advocacy is more important than ever for research communities and the stakeholders who support them. This session will present three brief case studies showing how scholarly publishing professionals are helping to surface the needs of the scholarly communications community and advocate for practices and policies that support equitable, sound scholarship. The first case study will set the stage with an overview of the Society for Scholarly Publishing's advocacy activities; the second will examine the implementation of the CARE Principles and what it takes to put values-driven stewardship into practice; the third will explore advocacy for scholarship at the federal level and how professionals can engage stakeholders to support the research enterprise. Come be inspired by these examples of advocacy in action, and leave with new insight into how scholarly professionals can connect people, principles, and policy to create meaningful change.
