When we arrive in 2030, what will the scholarly communications landscape look like?
This panel will discuss forward-thinking concepts of what "journals" were, and are, and what they might turn into in the next few years.
The focus will be a reconsideration of what journals do within the scholarly communications ecosystem. We will not linger on business model, except insofar as it affects the nature of the content and communications.
Are journals communities, or are they platforms? Can they be both?
Are they a product—a collection of articles provided to readers and their institutions?
Or are they a process—where once-hidden parts of the system (peer review, editorial curation, distribution, branding, etc.) are provided to authors and their institutions?
This 90 minute session will combine an expert panel discussing existing and evolving properties of the scholarly literature, combined with moderated round-table brainstorming on the features and functions of emerging and speculative models of scholarly communications.
